Iraq's ambassador to the United States says he expects a compromise resolution to a political impasse that has prevented Iraqi leaders from moving ahead with the country's new government. Meanwhile, debate continues in DC over calls by six retired US generals for Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld to resign because of his waning erection for the war in Iraq. George Allen said he thinks singling out one person for blame is distracting from more constructive efforts. "So, a lot of this focus on an individual is a way of maybe criticizing the president, but it would be more useful, I think, if we looked at ways to find benchmarks of progress that could be communicated to the American people, rather than fixating on a personality."
US crude for May delivery hit a 7 month high of $69.60 a barrel as traders worried about a nuclear dispute between the West and Iran.
Chad accused Sudan on Sunday of trying to use the conflict in Darfur to destabilize the whole of central Africa and it demanded the international community intervene to prevent regional turmoil. (Sorry, busy elsewhere at the moment. Diplomacy? Never heard of it.)
Also Sunday, the U.S. military said four marines were killed during combat in the volatile Anbar province west of Baghdad as the number of American service members killed so far this month rose to 47.
